Feast of St. Nick

I had to write a quick post for the Feast of St. Nicholas, my patron saint. Here’s a brief excerpt from a Facebook post I made regarding the always present question of “does Santa Claus exist”? Feel free to comment.

I got to thinking about the whole “is Santa real” question today… given it’s the feast of St. Nick! It’s too easy to pass it off that “Santa Claus” is just a fantasy figure, an amalgam of historical, mythological and biblical traditional blended with a bit of commercialism into what we know today. But there really was a Bishop Nicholas of Myra, later canonized a Saint. There was a Sinterklaas… even Scandanavian and Nordic folklore around the same type of person. Was all this coincidence? Yes, we’ve taken our own interpretations of the figure Santa Claus and made him the look and feel and story of what he is today, but the message and meaning behind the modern-day version doesn’t necessarily eliminate the potential for his existence. Do the saints exist? Take a minute over the next 18 days to consider that maybe, just maybe, there’s a spirit out there watching over us, watching over the children, spreading the spirit of goodwill on Earth… the song wasn’t kidding… Peace on Earth will come to all, if we just follow the light, so let’s give thanks to the Lord above, cause Santa Claus comes tonight! (Well, in 18 more days!) Merry Christmas!
