All about the “Magic Mile”

Jeff Galloway’s training plans call for a “Magic Mile” (MM) numerous times throughout half and full marathon training. The concept is simple – after a brief warmup, you run a mile as fast as you can, giving full effort. That mile, when applied to a simple calculation, can apparently accurately predict your race day pace. While I wasn’t planning on doing a MM today, I ended up pushing it for the first mile, coming away with a 10:16 pace. It felt good to push myself for the first time since the 5K a few weeks back. Unfortunately, my times over the next 4.21 miles continued to slow, but the average pace was well within my training plans. I also kept myself honest by getting back out there and running. It was also nice to get an afternoon run in for a change – I can’t believe how hard it is to fit daytime runs in on the weekends.
