runDisney Costume Policy

Two days out from heading to the Most Magical Place on Earth, runDisney sent out a “Revised Costume & Safety Update”. While I understand the need for things such as this, especially given the recent issues with weapons and such, doing it two days before a major race weekend when many people purposely wear costumes isn’t necessarily a good costumer service approach. Having said that, it’s Disney, they essentially can do what they want (within the legal system) because people will keep coming (and paying) for these events. Here’s the basics of the message:

Costumes: What’s New
For runDisney participants ages 14 and older:
Layered costumes, that could conceal prohibited items, are not permitted (e.g. Jedi robes).
Costume props, including those that surround the entire body (e.g. Death Star, UP House) are not permitted.
Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (e.g. full-length Princess dresses)
Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.
Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords, and tutus. Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
For runDisney participants ages 13 and under:
Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible.
Please remember all of the existing runDisney costuming rules apply. Guests may continue to dress as a family-friendly, favorite character, but must follow the guidelines as determined by Disney. Click Hereto review the entire costume guidelines.

Please note that while costumed attire may be worn during runDisney events, Guests ages 14 and older are not permitted to wear costumed attire in the theme parks. As a result, Guests may need to change their attire prior to visiting the theme parks after participating in a runDisney race.

Safety Reminders: What’s New
In keeping with the newly implemented additional security measures in our theme parks, runDisney is also implementing additional screening of our Guests.
All runners, guests, costumes, and bags are subject to screening prior to entering the event staging areas.
Weapons of any kind, or objects that appear to be actual weapons, including toy guns, are not allowed for any participants. (See costume guidelines above for examples of acceptable toy accessories.)
Please review the appropriate theme park rules for more details:

While I completely understand with these changes, I have to step back and wonder why the timing ended up being the way it was. Some of the costumes I’ve seen in recent races are just plain old dangerous to other runners. A guy with a 6′ tall fabric character strapped to his back has the making of an accident. Running around with weapons as well… although interestingly enough light sabers and toy swords are allowed… as are light up fairy wings. This is one of those Disney hypocritical things – can’t ban these things when they built multiple races around the themes.

For those of you traveling to complete any of the WDW Marathon Weekend races, hopefully this doesn’t damage your costuming plans. I’ve always taken the approach of wearing a custom race shirt, with the Chip’n’Dale Runner theme, rather a full-on costume. I’m still amazed at how some people “run” in costumes to begin with… although, the term “run” is sometimes stretched at runDisney events. Let me know your thoughts on these changes.

General, runDisney
