A New Addition… sorta…

Took the kids to the local Petco today for “Reptile Rally”… taking advantage of the Halloween themes, this event offered a look at all the different kinds of reptiles available as pets. Before we got there, a quick stop to Burger King to try out the new Satisfries… basically crinkle-cut fries that are apparently healthier than BK’s normal fries. They didn’t taste bad, but not as good as the unhealthy ones. Oh yes, and there was some girl dressed up like Spongebob Squarepants in the parking lot… dunno why… kids loved it though.

Anyway, aside from the hermit crab races at 2pm, which we didn’t stay for… we did bring home Lucy, a leopard gecko, along with a new 10 gallon aquarium and assorted desert-related items for habitat. This is my first foray into a pet that eats live insects and worms, so it will be interesting, although the 100-count container of meal worms can be refrigerated and last a while. The kids loved the gecko, and my daughter held the critter container dutifully in the back seat for the entire ride home. Here’s hoping my wife doesn’t totally flip out. Lucy joins the dog, cat, fish and hermit crabs in the family zoo.

I genuinely enjoy events that promote proper animal care and ownership. I actually had to sign a “Responsible Animal Owner” document, which to many people probably means nothing. If more people really would care and understand the commitment these creatures take to own and care for, I think the world would be a better place in many respects. Some people may view a gecko or a hermit crab as “disposable”, and it’s unfortunate. Lucy will be well cared for.
