Perspectives on the Long Run

With Goofy only a month away, I figured it was time to get a long run in – a real LONG run. My goal at this point, given some time lost to being sick and having other life events get in the way, was a 20 miler. I also went into this on the idea that the goal was to condition my body to handle the mileage. I learned at the end it’s more mental than anything else. 13.1 is that magic half distance that seemed so hard when I first started training, but now is just like “ok another half marathon”.

The original Goofy training plan had me doing at least 2 20-milers before the big races. Doing a half and a full marathon on back-to-back days, a total of 39.3 miles, will take a physical toll, but the mental aspect should not be overlooked. An unexpected “severe upper respiratory infection” knocked me out for the better part of nearly two weeks. The result is that my best shot for a long run was today, the day after Christmas.

I’m happy to say I accomplished most of it – 18.5 miles. I did it on the Northampton Canal Park, a trail that’s roughly 1 mile long. If you run it back and forth, each “lap” equates to about 2.5 miles (there’s a runoff section at the end that I added). My goal was to start and keep going as long as I could. I managed 7 laps, plus a little extra, without music, just listening to the sounds of nature. My pace was a lot slower than usual, and I’ll equate that to running the day after Christmas, the temperature being around 32 when I started at 7:45am, and two weeks of relatively no running. The best part of the morning, was over the 4 hours I was moving, the temperature rose into the 40’s making for a nice ending to the training run.

I also tried to adjust and stay ahead of my fueling. A combination of a gels, a protein bar, swedish fish, and tortilla chips along with a non-diet Coke kept me going throughout. I’m actually surprised that I never really felt hungry until the end. The real mental challenge came around Mile 14, when it was essentially uncharted territory. Back on Wine and Dine weekend, I technically was on my feet for close to 25+ miles in one day, but it was broken up throughout the day. Today, I knocked out the 18 and then some.

Now as I’m sitting here typing, and it’s almost 9pm, my left knee is a little sore, my right hamstring and calf muscles are tight, and my feet ache a bit. Overall, I’ll call this a success. It’s a mental boost to make my believe I can do this thing called Goofy in two more weeks. The other nice thing about the real race – I’ll have some running friends alongside to keep things interesting – and I’ll be at Walt Disney World. Can’t get any better than that… well, maybe if we have good weather!

Wishing Everyone a Merry Christmas!

Enjoy the special day of celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth. If you happen to not celebrate Christmas, enjoy the day off from work to spend with family and friends. If you have to work today, chances are you’re in a position that is important to city/town/state/nation/country that you live in. Thank you for your continued work and service! Let’s take time to recognize the reason for the season – we may all not agree on everything, but we can at least be tolerant of each other and share happiness together!

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa!

Christmas Eve

Last year at this time, I wrote a long post about the meaning of Christmas. Specifically, focusing on the idea of Santa Claus. We ended up with snow falling after the 6pm mass. This year, it was nothing but rain and a wet (but mild) Christmas Eve. It’s a good time to remember that while there might or might not be a real person named Santa Claus – all of us can bring that idea to life in the way we interact with others. Too many times this season, I’ve seen people being nasty or belligerent to others. Even something as simple as a Merry Christmas to those celebrating the Christian holiday. But people fighting for parking spaces, ignoring traffic signals, or just being generally grinch-y, it’s the time of year that this shouldn’t be the norm.

There’s a picture I posted last year showing Santa kneeling before the baby Jesus. It’s a powerful image, but a clear reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. It’s not Xmas, or The Holiday as some politically correct people would like it out to be. It’s a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Was Jesus born on Dec. 25? Probably not, considering the modern Gregorian Calendar hadn’t even been invented yet. But does that mean we should treat it as any other day? Absolutely not. It’s a time to reflect on the prior year, look forward to the future with anticipation, and enjoy the time with friends and family.

So this year, like last, I leave you with an image of the baby Jesus being visited not by kings or other important people, but by the spirit of Christmas that wraps so many kids (and hopefully) adults in a joyous time.

Goofy Laboratory Testing

After having not run for a while, the anxiety for Goofy (running a half and my first full back-to-back) is rising. I decided to try a little experiment today. There’s a paved canal trail not too far from my house. It’s essentially a 2.5 mile trip if I start at one end, and go out and back. I figured why not try walking it to see if I maintain a pace less than the 16 min/mile mandatory pace for runDisney events. The good news is I kept around 15:35 throughout. The bad news – I had to stop after 5 miles due to time constraints. Based on this, I know I can walk a decent chunk if I have to. Now the next issue is getting at least one major long run in before the New Year. I need some time to rest and taper, so the plan is the day after Christmas. With Goofy less than a month away, praying for injury and illness free days.

The Joys of Being Sick… and Trying to Run

Well, things have been quiet on the blog… and most of that is due to a combination of the new CTO job, and just getting over being sick. I haven’t run in earnest at all the last two weeks… between the beginning of the illness, the actual being sick part, and then recovering, it just wasn’t working. I finally got on the treadmill and pounded 3.1 tonight. I felt pretty good and kept a solid pace without feeling burnt out. Maybe the time off actually helped in the long run.

We’re now under a month from Goofy, and that 39.3 mile back-to-back combo is definitely starting to weigh on my mind. Hopefully I can get a solid 20 mile run in before the holidays, then taper/rest until the main event. I have a feeling this may be a one and done kinda thing – run the marathon – cross it off my bucket list – go back to running halfs!

I also need to comment on the holiday season, and the emergence of nastier than normal drivers. It’s the season to not stop at red lights, stop signs, or for emergency vehicles. Memo to those drivers – just remember that if you’re ever in need of emergency services and someone blocks the ambulance – karma sucks!

And now back to our regularly scheduled Advent…

The Ills of Winter

It was bound to happen… spent the last couple of days sick… what started as a bad cough, and was diagnosed as a cold on Thursday night quickly turned into bronchitis and a severe upper respiratory infection. Haven’t had a 101 fever in years… haven’t been sick like that in years. Thankfully, a weekend to rest and some strong antibiotics, and I’m feeling at least serviceable to get back to work.

If things could’ve been any more inconvenient, I started a new job as Chief Technology Officer this week, so nothing like taking Day 5 off sick. Go figure!

No surprise then that running has been put on hold till I am completely better. The elusive long run is still out there waiting for me with Goofy only a month away!

Turkey Trot 5K

So after stating a week or so ago that the Rocky Run 10K was my last “race” of the season, I ended up running the Bethlehem 12th Annual Turkey Trot 5K with my sister. This turned out be an impromptu decision, and looking back this morning, with 18 degree temps at the start, my knees not cooperating, I probably should have staying in the confines of a warm bed.

The run itself was fun, a nice little trek around Historic Bethlehem. However, the cold and spots of black ice made for some interesting “running”. All in all, it wasn’t one of my best 5K times, but I’ll take it as a good training run.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don’t get to enjoy the lavish feasts that many of us take for granted. Take some time between now and Christmas to do a little Random Act of Kindness (RAK) for a complete stranger.

The dinner table has gotten smaller in recent years, mostly due to relatives passing on. Here’s hoping things turn around for the next generation soon enough… kinda depressing that I’m getting old… but I always look forward to the holidays!

Finally, in true Disney spirit…

Sore Legs and Greener Pastures

The weather outside has been a bit frightful, and I’ve been nursing sore calves since the before the Rocky Run on Saturday. On top of it, I’m winding down at my current job, and getting ready for a new job as Chief Technology Officer of one of the largest school districts in Pennsylvania. It’s a career step that I’ve been working to for a few years now. The combination of all of this has really raised my stress level. Add to that preparing for a big birthday party for my son this Saturday, and then Thanksgiving a few days later, and it’s just been one thing after another. I really have to kick myself back into regular running, not just for the marathon training, but for a good stress reliever.
